New to karate?

General guidance for the sport, not facts about this school. Check the details above, and ask the school if anything differs.

Belts and grading

  • You start at white belt and move through coloured belts. These steps are called kyu grades. Black belt is the first dan grade, and further dan grades come after that.
  • Belt colours and the number of steps change from school to school and from association to association, so a green belt in one dojo may not match a green belt in another.

Your first class

  • Arrive a little early. Most dojos ask you to take your shoes off and bow when you step onto the floor.
  • Expect a warm-up, then basics: stances, punches, kicks and blocks, done in lines with the whole class.

Kit

  • A karate uniform (gi) and a belt. Schools usually sell them, so ask before buying elsewhere.
  • Sparring gear comes later and depends on the style: gloves, shin or foot guards, a mouthguard and, for some classes, a groin guard. Your coach will tell you what is needed.

Ask the school

  • Which style do you teach, and who certifies the belts?
  • Is there a free or paid trial class, and what should I wear?
  • Which batch suits a beginner of my age, and how big is it?
  • What do gradings, uniforms and tournaments cost on top of the monthly fee?
