About this page and where the facts come from

These are the karate dojos and clubs we list across India, grouped by city, with the style each school teaches where it says so, such as Shotokan, Kyokushin, Goju-ryu or Isshin-ryu.

Compare the area, any published fee, trial class and the date we last checked each listing. Then open a full page or ask the matcher for a shortlist.

We do not invent prices or hours. If something is missing it shows as Not confirmed.

Facts come from Roundhouse research only. If we have not confirmed something, it says “Not confirmed” instead of a guess. A gym shows as confirmed only when the gym itself confirmed the listing.

What is karate?

Karate is a striking art from Okinawa and Japan. You learn punches, kicks, blocks and stances, practise them alone, with a partner and in set sequences called kata, and move up through coloured belts as you improve.

Classes are usually run in a dojo (a training hall). Most schools teach kids and adults, and many welcome complete beginners. Styles differ a lot, so the school's style tells you more than the word karate does.

Karate styles you will see in India
Shotokan

A Japanese style known for strong, long stances and direct, straight-line techniques. Classes mix basics (kihon), set forms (kata) and sparring (kumite). Many schools in our listings teach it, including JKA-style dojos.

Kyokushin

A full-contact style. Sparring is hard and continuous, usually without gloves or pads. Punches to the face are not allowed, but kicks to the head can be. It suits people who want to test themselves against a partner, so ask how beginners are brought into contact.

Goju-ryu

An Okinawan style whose name means hard and soft. It mixes firm strikes with circular blocks and close-range work, with a lot of attention to breathing and kata.

Isshin-ryu

An Okinawan style with a compact, direct way of striking. Some schools teach it alongside kobudo (traditional weapons).

Belts and grading in plain words
  • You start at white belt and move through coloured belts. These steps are called kyu grades. Black belt is the first dan grade, and further dan grades come after that.
  • Belt colours and the number of steps change from school to school and from association to association, so a green belt in one dojo may not match a green belt in another.
  • To move up you take a grading, where an examiner watches your basics, your kata and sometimes sparring. Many schools charge a separate grading fee. Ask what it is before you join.
  • More than one body issues karate grades in India. Ask who certifies the belt and whether it links to a world or national body you recognise.
What a first karate class is like
  • Arrive a little early. Most dojos ask you to take your shoes off and bow when you step onto the floor.
  • Expect a warm-up, then basics: stances, punches, kicks and blocks, done in lines with the whole class.
  • Beginners are usually taught kata or short drills with a partner, and the class ends with a cool-down. Sparring comes later, once you know the basics.
  • Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Most schools let you try a class before you buy a uniform. Ask when you enquire.
Kit for karate
  • A karate uniform (gi) and a belt. Schools usually sell them, so ask before buying elsewhere.
  • Sparring gear comes later and depends on the style: gloves, shin or foot guards, a mouthguard and, for some classes, a groin guard. Your coach will tell you what is needed.
  • Bring water and a small towel. Training is barefoot on a mat or a clean floor.
What karate classes cost
  • Monthly fees differ by school and by how many days a week you train. Where a school publishes its fee, we show it on its listing. Where it does not, we say Not confirmed.
  • Grading exams, uniforms, tournament entries and annual registrations are often charged on top of the monthly fee. For example, one Delhi school's official fees page lists grading exam fees from ₹1,200 to ₹4,500 by grade (checked 27 October 2026).
Can adults start karate from zero?

Yes. Most dojos run beginner batches for adults and kids, and you start at white belt. Ask for a trial class to see whether the pace suits you.

Which karate style should I choose?

Pick the teacher first. After that, Shotokan suits people who like clear, structured basics, Goju-ryu suits people who like close-range work and kata, and Kyokushin suits people who want hard, full-contact sparring.

How long does it take to get a black belt?

It varies by school and association. Most take several years of regular training with gradings along the way. Be wary of any school that promises a black belt on a fixed short timeline.

Is karate good for kids?

Many schools run kids' batches with basics, games and early belts. Look for small groups, a patient coach and clear rules about contact. Visit a class before you commit.

Do I need to buy a uniform before the first class?

Usually not. Most schools let you try a class in comfortable clothes and sell the uniform once you join. Ask when you enquire.

How much does karate cost per month?

It depends on the school. We only show a fee when we found it on the school's own page, otherwise the listing says Not confirmed. Gradings and uniforms are usually extra.
